Sephora 101: Welcoming Sephora to Thunder Bay

Sephora 101

Hi guys! Though many of you are likely well-acquainted with Sephora, I’m happy to report that Thunder Bay’s very own Sephora store is opening later on this week! I thought with that in mind it would be fun to go over some products that I absolutely adore and consider staples in my makeup collection and add in a few tips. So while this post reads more like a guide to Sephora, even seasoned shoppers may find a product or two worth checking out!

Sephora Must-Haves

Urban Decay | Vice Lipstick

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick

I have a pretty severe love for Urban Decay but their gigantic range of lipstick is truly a must. With several different formulas ranging from sheer to mega-matte and everything in-between, there is truly something for everyone. My personal favourite is the Comfort Matte formula as it is long-wearing, and as the name suggests, comfortable on the lips. You can find a full review I did on that formula here! Some of my favourite shades include: 1993, Native & Trance.

Becca | Shimmering Skin Perfector (Pressed)

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector

A bit on the pricy side, yes, but no one does a highlight like Becca! I own quite a few of these beauties and they have all been well worth the price, both stand alone shades and those that came in kits. They provide a beautiful glow to the face and can be easily blended. They are quite pigmented so although these are a bit of an investment, a little goes a long way and it will last for ages. My personal favourites are: Prismatic Amethyst (limited edition), Pearl & Moonstone.

Too Faced | Chocolate Bar Palette

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette

I was going to mention the Urban Decay Naked Palettes, but since we have had them at Shopper’s since the fall, and most people are pretty familiar with them already, I thought I would give the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette some love. It is a beautiful neutral palette that contains everything you need for several different eye looks. If you’re looking for an all-around great palette that is useful for any occasion, I’d highly recommend checking this beauty out!

Urban Decay | Afterglow Blush

Urban Decay Afterglow Blush

I have to give Urban Decay a little bit more love in this post… Their Afterglow Blush formula is by far my favourite blush formula. It is pigmented so a little bit goes a long way and it blends like a dream. I have been wearing my favourite shade, Fetish, for almost two years now on a near daily basis and I have barely made a dent on it. Not to mention, this shade goes with every single makeup look that I have thrown at it. In a sea of blushes, this one definitely gets the most use of any in my collection.

Other Tips & Tricks

  • Do not walk in the store and buy a foundation on the spot. Sephora staff are happy to make you a sample of one you are interested in. This allows you to see what it looks like in natural lighting and how it works with your skin type as well as the other products in your routine.
  • Sephora does two sales a year, one in the fall (usually November) and one in the spring (usually April). The dates for your sale and discount are dependent on your rank in their Beauty Insider program but it is definitely worth saving the more expensive items on your wish list for these occasions!
  • Most of all, have fun! Makeup is all about experimenting and expression yourself. It took me awhile to embrace this but that is part of what inspired me to start this blog. Feel like wearing a full face of makeup to the grocery store? Go for it! Feel like going out bare-faced? That’s great too!

I hope this post was both useful for anyone who is perhaps unfamiliar with Sephora! I am personally super excited to have one of my favourite stores to browse just a 5 minute drive away. I didn’t mention any base products (foundation, concealer, etc) in this post as those are a very personal choice based on your skin type and skin tone.

For those of you who are very well acquainted with Sephora, what are some of your favourite products? Let us know in the comments down below!

xoxo,

Robyn

  1. Woohoo! I totally understand the excitement of seeing a Sephora at last!! as a beauty blogger, having a Sephora nearby is almost a necessity 🙂 Great picks – I haven’t tried the Vice lipsticks so I’ll have to give that a try the next time I’m in store!

  2. Woohoo, congrats on getting a Sephora in Thunder Bay. That’s a big deal! 😀
Great tips especially about getting samples first.
For me, I like to focus on brands that aren’t available at either Shoppers or The Bay. I’d much rather collection Optimum Points or the Bay rewards points than Sephora’s stupid fake points. 😛 Even Nordstrom has a points program where you get money back. So at Sephora, I always check out Sephora’s own brand of beauty products – they’re really great quality and very affordable too.

    • Yeah for us the Sephora will be a big deal since we don’t have the Bay or Nordstrom. Our Shopper’s has gotten a bit better (they got Urban Decay) and we have a little bit at Sears, but other than that.. it’s pretty slim pickings around here. The Sephora store looks MASSIVE so I’m super excited. It will be nice to have more of a makeup selection locally. Yay!!! I actually walked right past Sephora in the Mall of America yesterday because I know I’ll be at the local one for the launch party on Thursday. Yay for willpower!
