Urban Decay is by far one of my favourite brands, so when I saw they had released a new mascara, my interest was definitely captured. However, I don’t usually purchase many high end mascaras as there are so many great drug store ones so I didn’t immediately jump on board. When I saw that the Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara was part of the Sephora Favourites Lashstash as one of the full sized products it sealed the deal on that purchase. The Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara promises to “[deliver] a lengthening, perfectly fanned-out look with extreme volume for longer, thicker-looking lashes”. Let’s see how it delivered on this promise!
First off, the packaging is quite sleek. It is a shiny duo-chrome tube that is really quite eye-catching. The brush has tiny hooks to grab each lash and apply the product to ensure no lash is missed. I quite like the size of it, it isn’t too big or too small. It worked well for both the top and bottom lashes.
My lashes are usually quite prone to clumping but I found this didn’t happen at all when using the Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara. My lashes ended up looking more fanned out which I really like about it. The other nice part of it is that I can apply multiply coats without going from zero-to-uni-lash. Usually I can only get two coats in before clumping but I can get three coats on without ending up with one clumpy looking lash. This allows me to customize how much volume/thickness I want with my lashes on any given day.
I haven’t really had any issues with flaking or smudging, though I don’t typically experience that with mascaras. As usual, my mascara looks the same at night as it did in the morning. It isn’t the most dramatic looking mascara but I like it for an everyday look.
Overall, while I really do enjoy the way that the Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara looks, I don’t know if I would shell out $30 CAD for it knowing there are $12 options at the drugstore that are just as good. I think I would reserve this for the annual Sephora sales or if it came in another value set like this. While I don’t think it delivers “extreme volume” as promised, it definitely adds length and fans out the lashes. Two out of three ain’t bad!

Hmmm I’m on the fence with this one. It sounded interesting but I agree – there are great drugstore options! I will have to crack open the mini I have and give it a test.

Yes definitely try the mini first! I made the leap because it was in the set.

What drugstore mascaras do you recommend? Looking for volume, lengthening and smudge proof. I do love many things at Sephora but yes $30 for mascara is a bit much….

I really like the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise for drugstore. The Essence Lash Princess is great too!

I’m not one to spend full price on a high end mascara either! Too many good drugstore versions that work the same! I wasn’t a fan of this mascara but I also heard people saying there was a big difference between the mini sample size Urban Decay sent out and the actual full size! The mini was awful for flaking and smudging. I have the full size from the Lash stash set as well and I want to try it to see if that rumour is true and it’s better but on the other hand, I kind of don’t so that I can just gift it.

Oh that’s so weird! I’ve never heard of a difference between a full size and a mini size mascara. I’d love to hear how they differ if you do end up opening the full size!

Great review! I’ve been wondering about this mascara! I agree, it would have to blow my mind to replace other drug store options. Love your blog!
