Best of 2018

Best of 2018

Nearly a week into 2019 and I’m still in a bit of disbelief that 2018 is over. I don’t know if the year flew by or if it seemed like a long year. I just can’t tell! While the summer flew by because my life revolved around fixing up my old house to get it ready to sell, it also feels like Paris (where I started the year) seems like an eternity ago. Anyways, regardless, I’m excited to share with you my best of 2018! I decided to categorize it this year to make it easier to round up my favourites to make sure nothing was missed. Since I’ve categorized it and there are some items that still hold-up this year there will be some old favourites, as well as some new ones! Grab a snack because this is a long one!

Best of 2018 Complexion Products

Foundation:

L’Oreal | Infallible Pro-Matte I STILL haven’t found a foundation that I truly love as much as this one. There’s a few higher end ones that I use more for special occasions but this is my tried-and-true everyday foundation. I go through approximately 4 of these a year!

Concealer:

Tarte | Shape Tape Another favourite that has followed me from 2017 to 2018. I haven’t found a concealer that I love as much as this one. The coverage, the formula, the shade… I can’t get enough of it. I’m nearly out of it and have been trying out NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and I can tell you right now that for me at least it doesn’t compare.

Tinted Moisturizer:

BareMinerals | Complexion Rescue A new favourite! Before my summer got completely chaotic I did quite a bit of hiking which put me on the hunt for a tinted moisturizer that had SPF that agreed with my oily skin (it Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream is horrible on my skin). I picked up a sample of this one and I quite liked it. I do still get shiny but it didn’t melt away. It was perfect for the summer months and well really any time of the year where I just want to slap something on to even out my complexion that is lightweight.

Powder:

Fenty Beauty | Invisimatte Blotting Powder Not a new favourite but this blotting powder (which I use to set my makeup) was so good that I repurchased it! It is nice and light in setting my makeup and it really does help keep my oils at bay! It also truly is invisible so it is undetectable.

Eye Products

Eye Primer:

Urban Decay | Eyeshadow Primer Potion I have yet to find an eyeshadow primer that keeps my eyeshadow looking as flawless all day as this one. I have tried others that I’ve seen rave reviews on but this one seems to get along best with my eyelid chemistry. Why mess with success?

Eyeshadow Palette (Fun):

Anastasia Beverly Hills | Norvina Palette My favourite fun palette this year had to be the ABH Norvina Palette. My purple loving and cool tone loving heart skipped a beat when I saw this one. The sparkly purple shades are just… stunning. My favourite shade though is Rose Gold which has a very, very foiled texture to it. An honourable mention though is the Kat Von D Metal Matte Palette which I still use ALL THE TIME for more colourful looks.

Eyeshadow Palette (Netural):

Zoeva | Cocoa Blend For a more everyday palette the Zoeva Cocoa Blend was definitely a stand-out this year. Not a new palette, but new to me it was used a LOT this year, particularly earlier on when I had recently purchased it. It has a great selection of shades and the formula is really great.

Eyeliner (Pencil):

Esqido | Gel Eyeliner Pencil While I did receive this as PR for review purposes I was completely blown away by the quality of the Esqido Gel Eyeliner Pencils (Black & Brown). They are so creamy and pigmented. There is absolutely no tugging at all when applying them!

Eyeliner (Glitter):

Urban Decay | Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner (Glam Rock) I love the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner for adding a little something extra to an eye look. I like layering it over a black eyeliner or in the inner corner! It adds a fine layer of glitter but can be built up if you’re feeling extra glittery!

Mascara:

Benefit | Roller Lash My favourite mascara this year was hands-down Benefit’s Roller Lash. Mine is ready to be tossed and I don’t know how I am going to survive without it (I have a ton of other unopened mascaras that need to be used before I can justify buying another). I love how it curled my lashes without needing an eyelash curler! It’s a bit of a pain to remove but it is so worth it to me.

Brow Product:

Anastasia Beverly Hills | Dipbrow Not a new favourite but it would take a lot for ABH Dip Brow to be dethroned. I did switch up my shade within the last year or so from Taupe to Ash Brown which was a game changer. Taupe matches my natural brows but I’m liking doing them a bit darker to go better with my hair. Even with my hair being red again I still like the darker brows.

Cheek Products

Highlighter:

The Balm | Mary-Lou Manizer Another oldie, but I did start using this a lot again in 2018. I think I took a bit of a break from it the year prior but it has been my go-to again. It goes with everything!

Bronzer:

Too Faced | Sun Bunny Natural Bronzer 2018 was the year of using bronzer for me! I never really used it much before and opted for contouring, however last year I used bronzer more to sculpt my face. This one has a slight shimmer to it but I found it really added a nice glow to my face.

Blush:

Makeup Revolution | The Matte Blush in Beloved Another favourite that carried over from 2017 but this blush is just… everything. I honestly use it almost every day unless I’m doing a makeup look for the blog or for a special occasion where I MIGHT switch it up and use something else. It just goes with everything and goes on so effortlessly. I can’t believe I haven’t hit pan on this. I’m glad I didn’t though because I didn’t see it last time I was at Ulta.

Lip Products

Lip Balm:

Naked Kitty | The Balm (Peppermint) I always use a lip balm under every single lipstick that I wear to make them feel more comfortable. Naked Kitty’s The Balm has been my go-to for at least the last year. It’s hydrating, clear and smells so refreshing! Bonus points: the lovely creator, Sara, is an old friend from high school!

Lip Mask:

Bite Beauty | Agave Lip Mask Putting on a lip mask before bed is an essential part of my routine and I am still in love with Bite Beauty’s Agave Lip Mask for this. It’s nice and thick feeling and leaves my lips feeling so hydrated by morning!

Lipstick (Traditional):

Bite Beauty | Amuse Bouche Lipstick This was definitely a Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche year for me. They are just so comfortable to wear and come in so many pretty shades. Some of my favourites this year were Black Truffle, Eggplant & Hot Harissa.

Lipstick (Liquid):

Fenty Beauty | Stunna Lip Paint (Uncuffed) Stunna Lip Paint from Fenty Beauty was a favourite last year as well but the shade Uncuffed which came out this fall reconfirmed my love for it. I love the unique applicator and how indestructible the formula is! I also find it comfortable to wear but I have a high tolerance for matte lipsticks.

Face Masks

Best of 2018 Face Masks

I didn’t do categories for each component of skincare because my routine doesn’t change much and I really am not an expert in this area.. but there were a few face masks that I wanted to mention that I used a lot in 2018!

Farmacy | Bright On Massage Activated Vitamin C Mask One of the more unique masks that I used this year was Farmacy’s Bright On which actually changes colour as you massage it into your skin! I love how bright and refreshed my skin looks after using it!

GLAMGLOW | Supermud Clearing Treatment Not a new favourite per say but I still can’t get over how cool this mask is to use. Seeing all the little dots appear all over my face because of the gunk that is being extracted is just interesting to see.

GLAMGLOW | Gravitymud Firming Treatment Another mask that isn’t necessarily a new favourite but another that remains a staple in my skincare routine. My skin definitely feels and looks tighter after using it.

Boscia | Charcoal Pore Pudding Another pore-specific mask but I discovered Boscia Pore Pudding this past fall and fell in love with it as well. I love the combination of black and white charcoal! It also makes my skin feel so fresh and clean after using it.

Phew! We made it to the end! If you are still reading, kudos to you! I really didn’t want to leave anything out this year!

What were some of your favourites from 2018? Let me know in the comments below! Please feel free to link your best of 2018 posts, I’d love to read them!

Robyn

  1. I’ve heard great things about the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue. After I’m done the IT Cosmetics CC cream, I’ll give the BareMinerals one a try.
The Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick formula is perfection! If you’re ever in Toronto, definitely consider getting a custom shade made. I love the ones I made in the Amuse Bouche formula.

Oh yes getting a custom Bite Beauty shade is definitely on my list of things to do when I’m in Toronto. I was going to do it last time I was there but it was a really quick trip. Usually I’m just passing through.

  2. A lot of people recommend the Nars concealer if you’re a fan of Shape Tape so I’m surprised to see that you didn’t like it as much! I love my Shape Tape but ordering it from the US is a pain so I was thinking of trying something new.

I find the NARS concealer way too finnicky. It crusts up/creases way too easily during application for me.
