And just like that, the first month of 2018 is nearly behind us! If the first month is any indication of my reading pace this year, I think I’ll have a pretty successful reading-year! I’ve definitely picked up quite a few books lately that I’m super eager to read so I think I will have no problem continuing to make reading a priority in my life. I think my plan for this year will be to try to hit 320,000 words per month (equivalent of 4 average sized books). I use words as my measurement because I found when I was going just by number of books, I strayed away from reading longer books as it was preventing me from meeting my goals. Last year my goal was 240,000 words per month (3 average sized books). I decided at the last minute, as I was writing this to bump up my goal. So, let’s see what kind of start I’m off to…

Love of Reading: October Edition
Hi guys! As you may or may not have noticed, I did not do a Love of Reading post for September. Between coming back from my vacation and then getting sick, I just didn’t have the time or energy to read so I didn’t finish any books. October was just… busy so again, not a lot of reading was done so I only finished one book! I actually ALMOST had a second done, but didn’t quite cross the finish line in time. Anyways, since I enjoy sharing what I’ve read lately with you, I thought I would write this post anyways. Continue reading
Love of Reading: July Edition
Hi guys! I’m re-naming my “book club” series to “Love of Reading”, I think it has a nicer catch to it and it really sums up how I feel about reading. I really thought I would do more reading in the month of July, but then Pokemon Go happened. I didn’t spend as much time at the cottage as I thought I would, but I was walking around the city with my husband averaging about 25,000 steps a day so, at least I was active! I did by some stroke of a miracle made my goal of reading two books this month though, so yay!
The One & Only by Emily Giffin
I’ve always enjoyed Emily Giffin’s books and what I liked about this one is that it seemed different than her other books. This one was very much centred around college football. Something that is totally out of my zone of things I know anything about. I think that is what I found interesting about it and kept me hooked. The One & Only is about Shea and her passion for college football. Her best friend, Lucy’s, father is an award winning football coach so she grew up with a love for the sport. When Lucy’s mother passes away from cancer it starts a chain reaction that changes all of their lives. It’s a fairly light read that is great for a day at the beach!
June Book Club
Hi guys! June was another decent reading month, I met my goal of reading two books. I think in July I’ll surpass my goal as I usually spend my weekends at the cottage reading up a storm, but we’ll see! This month I read two books that I absolutely loved and both are by Canadian writers!
Room by Emma Donoghue
I had wanted to read this for awhile and I promised myself that I would read it before watching the movie so this was high on my list of books to read (still haven’t watched the movie yet). I loved this book! It’s told from the perspective of five-year-old Jack whose entire world is one room. To him it’s the comforting place that he was born, but to his mother, it is the place she has been held captive for the past seven years. It’s a very powerful and emotional story that demonstrates the bond of a mother and her son who she would do anything to keep safe. I can’t recommend this book enough if you haven’t already read it! May Book Club
Hi guys! I’ve gotten more in the swing of reading again this month and I have been reading up a storm. There is nothing better than relaxing on the deck with a good book and I am so glad that the weather has been getting warmer to allow that to happen. I managed to read three books this month which makes up for the lack of reading last month!
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
The Rosie Project is about a socially awkward geneteics professor, Don, who decides that the best way to find a wife would be through a questionnaire that would find him his most compatible partner. He meets Rosie who is the complete opposite of what he is looking for, however he spends a lot of time with her helping her with a genetics project. The book is in the romantic comedy genre and I really enjoyed it. The characters are quirky and you immediately grow attached to them. I highly recommend it! Continue reading
April Book Club
Hi guys! Book Club this month is a bit sparse, I only managed to read one book. My goal is to read two every month but I ended up unusually busy during the month of April. I did get a chance to read more towards the end of the month so, I did manage to read at least one. I didn’t think I was going to finish any at the rate I was going! But, I can always do better in the month of May! It’s finally warming up outside so I’m looking forward to reading on the deck.
Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns by Lauren Weisberger
This is the sequel to Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada, so if you enjoyed that book then I think you will enjoy this one as well. Once again we follow Andrea Sachs as she navigates through her personal and professional life. This novel takes place ten years after the original and much has changed in Andrea’s life. She has met a new man, and has started up a successful bridal magazine. However, this new path she is on leads her right back to the devil herself, Miranda Priestly. I enjoyed reading it, and as I said, if you enjoyed the original, chances are you will enjoy this one too!
So, that is what I have read this month! I would love to know if you have read anything lately so please feel free to leave a comment down below! If you would like to participate in May’s Book Club let me know and we can link each other. Please contact me at lipstick.on.the.lake@gmail.com if you are interested.

March Book Club
Hi guys! Another month has passed and it is time to go over the books that I read this month. For those of you who don’t know, I made a commitment to myself to read a minimum of two books each month this year. I’ve always been an avid reader, but in this day and age of technology, it is hard to make the time to sit down and enjoy a book.
With that said, this is what I have read this month! Continue reading
February Book Club
Hi guys! It’s time for another Book Club Post! If you missed the first one, basically what I am trying to do is read a minimum of two books a month. I used to be an avid reader but at some point became too busy for one of my favourite hobbies so this is me trying to get back into it. At the end of each month I’ll give you a bit of information about what I have read this month. If you want to join in you can do so by either posting in the comments or you can post on your own blog. I’m definitely open to having this become a collaboration if you want to join in! If anyone wants to participate next month let me know and we can link to each other!
With that said, this is what I have read this month! Continue reading
January Book Club
Hi guys! This year I’m trying to read more books so I thought it would be fun to let you guys know what I’ve read at the end of each month and give you my thoughts on the books. I’m trying to read a minimum of two books each month. Reading was always something I have loved doing my whole life and over the past few years I just haven’t made the time for it.
First I told myself I would have more time after university. Now, four years later, I still don’t think I read as much as I used to and I miss it. All it took was a trip through Chapters after Christmas and I felt the passion reignite. I really hope I can stick to this.
With that said, this is what I have read this month! Continue reading
