The Canadian Beauty Bloggers theme of the month for February is First Beauty Loves which is so fitting for such a love-focused month. This theme has encouraged me to look through my makeup collection and remember the products that truly were first loves. Products that helped develop the passion for makeup that I have today. I’ve always worn makeup but it wasn’t until about five years ago that I really got into it. What I mean by that was I started to teach myself more about the products and application techniques and started shopping beyond just picking up staples once a year from the drugstore. So let’s take a look at what products were a big part of starting this makeup journey that I am on!
Urban Decay | Ammo Palette
I didn’t really own any makeup palettes, or any higher end makeup until I scooped up the Urban Decay Ammo Palette on Hautelook. I instantly fell in love with the shade Chopper and hitting pan on it is what made me start looking at Urban Decay’s Naked Palettes (it is in the Naked 2 Palette as well) which then led to a full-on eyeshadow palette obsession. Perhaps I wouldn’t have started blogging if I never purchased this palette? There’s some great shades in this palette that I clearly wasn’t brave enough to use back then, I really need to start using them!
MAC | Lipstick in Up the Amp
When I got married I asked the makeup artist who was doing my makeup what kind of setting powder she was using so that I could purchase one to use for touch ups. It was a MAC powder and as there is no MAC store in Thunder Bay I went to order it online. I don’t like paying for shipping so I added a few lipsticks to qualify for free shipping; one of which was Up the Amp. I always have worn lipstick but I didn’t usually play with bolder colours and this beautiful purple shade really changed that. It gave me the confidence to wear a whole array of shades and got me into shopping for higher end lipsticks. I still go back to this lipstick because I love this colour so much.
L’Oreal | Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation
It took me a long time to realize that foundation formulas don’t work for all skin types and that my oily skin needed something matte. Until purchasing L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation I never really purchased the same foundation twice and rarely wore it because it never seemed worth it. This foundation works SO well with my oily skin and I’ve purchased SO many of these in the last four or five years. This is the first foundation I’ve ever really loved, I always end up going back to it.
Too Faced | Candlelight Glow Highlighting Powder Duo
Since I have oily skin I wasn’t really that interested in highlighters because I was afraid they would make me look even more oily. On a whim I picked up Too Faced Candlelight Glow on a rare trip to Sephora (we didn’t have one in Thunder Bay at the time) after swatching it. I’m so glad I took the chance because I now love wearing highlighters of various intensities and colours on the high points of my cheeks!
Colourpop | Ultra-Matte Liquid Lipstick in Beeper
If you’ve been following my blog for awhile you probably know that I love liquid lipsticks. I love the longevity, the pigmentation and love a matte finish on the lips in general. However, it was Colourpop’s Ultra-Matte Liquid Lipsticks that really got me into them. I figured for the low price it was worth the gamble, I wasn’t sure if I’d find them too drying like some people do. I’m glad I took the chance because I personally don’t find them drying at all. The shade Beeper was one of the first that I purchased and it is still a go-to.

Great selections of products. That Too Faced highlighter looks really pretty. They haven’t been releasing stuff that I’m excited about lately.

Same! I haven’t been interested in a Too Faced launch in quite awhile now. I used to be all over their new collections!
