Happy Saturday, everyone! I thought I would do something a little bit different today and talk about some of my favourite books. I am an avid reader and have more favourites than I can count. I love how a good book can transport you to another world. My favourite thing to do is read a book outside on a nice sunny day. It is pure paradise.
Without further adieu, here are some of my favourites (in no particular order):
White Oleander by Janet Finch
I have loved this book since I was 13 years old, and given that I am now almost 26, that means I have read this book many, many times. It is a wonderful coming-of-age story about a girl named Astrid who bounces between several Los Angeles foster homes due to her mother’s imprisonment. Each home is like it’s own independent world, each with it’s own rules and it’s own dangers.
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
This is another book that I have read several times. It is based on the real life trial of Grace Marks who was found guilty of murdering her employer and his mistress at age 16 in 1843. Alias Grace is a fictional reconstruction of Grace’s story. Every time I read this book I feel like I learn something new. I’ve yet to grow tired of it.
Left Neglected by Lisa Genova
This is a book that I’ve recently read within the past few months. This book had me hooked from the very start. It is the story of a mother of three who because of a car crash, ends up with a brain disorder called “left neglect”. This means she loses awareness of everything on her left side. It was a fascinating read and reminded me why I studied Psychology in university. It is a powerful and unforgettable book.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
I know this book probably seems over-hyped over the past year but it really is very enjoyable to read. I took it with me on my honeymoon last fall and I couldn’t put it down. I don’t think I need to say much about this book since as I said, it has talked about a lot over the past year. If you haven’t read it, go read it! It is a thrilling book that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks
I am a huge Nicholas Sparks fan, and have been for the last 13 years. The Guardian though, is my favourite. It is not only about a widowed woman who is ready to find love, but it is also about the strong bond between a woman and her dog. It also is one of the only Nicholas Sparks books that also is a bit of a thriller. I highly recommend it if you haven’t read it. I’ve read this book at least 5 times and it still has me on the edge of my seat each time.
Do you agree with any of my choices? Let me know in the comments below and recommend some of your favourites!

Great list! I have never read The Guardian, but you can never go wrong with a Nicholas Sparks book. I discovered White Oleander around the same age as you and it’s also one of my favourite books of all time! It’s so beautifully written. Your blog post reminded me to take it off my bookshelf and read it on a lazy Sunday.

Oops, I have more to add! If you haven’t read Gillian Flynn’s other two books, I would highly recommend them, especially if you liked the dark themes of Gone Girl.
Thanks for the recommendations on the other books! I’ve been eyeing Left Neglected every time I’m at the bookstore – will definitely pick it up now! And Alias Grace sounds fascinating 🙂

Thank you for the comments! I’m glad I reminded you to give White Oleander another read… I started re-reading it awhile ago and forgot about it. I need to go back and finish it again, it’s so wonderful! I have read Gillian Flynn’s other two books and I couldn’t put them down either. I can’t wait for Dark Places to become a movie.
I hope you enjoy Left Neglected, I found it slow at the beginning but then it ended up being fascinating!
Thank you for reading my post, I really truly appreciate it 🙂
